PPYC’s Club Boat Program

With the support of Metro Parks and Hamilton Creek Sailboat Marina, PPYC has embarked on a club boat program for members. The goal of the program is to provide sailboats that qualified members who would not otherwise have access to a boat can use on a scheduled basis. The program was launched in 2007 with the donation of an O’Day 23 by Jane Alston that was renamed The Phillips in honor of Bud and Jan Phillips, founding members of PPYC. In 2008, we added a Northstar 500 to the program thanks to the generous donation of David and Nancy Winter and refurbished it with funds from a donation by our own Sonny Belew.
With the addition of the Northstar, we have implemented a two-level system of participation in the Club Boat program. Those wishing to sail only the O’Day 23 can join the program at the “Ensign” level, which has an annual fee of $100 in 2008. Those wishing to sail both the Northstar and the O’Day 23 can join the program at the “Pilot” level, which has a higher level of certification and a higher fee of $250 due to the added cost for slippage for the Northstar. Pilot level captains are also allowed to race either club boat in the Portsmouth handicap fleet on Wednesday nights or in the regattas. Eventually we hope to qualify enough club boat members to race the Northstar in the one-design fleet at the regattas.
